Cool and Cooler

We found this cool bike and were happy to have done so. A classic Longjohn cargo bike painted with authentic Mercedes paint and an addded Mercedes star logo attached.
We wondered who customised this wonder and we found a small Danish company called Esimex who customise cargo bikes for personal, commercial and industrial use.
As coincedence will have it, they are responsible for the new ice cream bikes at the Copenhagen Zoo that will pedal around the Gardens this summer. We spotted the newly delivered ice cream trikes, shiny new, the other day at the Zoo:

The good news about the Esimex Long John is that the frame can be disassembled into two parts (which makes it easier to transport the transport bike). The bad news is that the over-all quality of Esimex Long Johns doesn´t meet those of the old original SCO models. Especially the SCOs built until the early seventies are superior (though quite heavy). http://www.longjohn.org has a nice overview of vintage SCOs Long Johns.
Also, the position of the steering pivot point on the ice cream trikes is not optimal and is likely to cause an instable ride. It´s better to have the pivot below the cargo box just between the two front wheels.
thanks for that info. what about the quality of the Velorbis longjohns? now that they are producing them?

The Velorbis model (built by Monark, Sweden) is the direct successor of the previous SCO model built until 1997. I my opinion the quality of the late SCO frames (and the following Monark model until 2003) is definitely below the older models, but still quite okay (the welded joints on the Esimex are perhaps even better, but I´m not sure). I guess the same goes for the Velorbis. When it comes to components, the SCOs built around the mid nineties were superb. High quality Sachs gear hubs (chromed steel, no aluminum and weird plastic clickboxes) and Sachs hydraulic front drum brakes. As these components are no longer available the Velorbis model can hardly beat this.
