The Dutchess
Designer Wytze van Mansum has completed his graduation project which involved designing a ladies bicycle for a company called Cannondale. The bicycle is called The Dutchess.
He reports that he was inspired by Copenhagen Cycle Chic, which is nice, and here you can see the film about his project, as well as the bicycle.
It looks quite cool.

10 thinking out louds:
I would like to see bikes like that on the streets here...
and more cyclist like that. ;-)
Nice-looking bike and very nice-looking cyclist. But I wonder if that rack actually works - after doing all her shopping at the market, the bag just disappears!
Also her saddle should be a little higher...
Nice design and presentation. Very clean lines. I wonder if the rear fender has enough length to protect the rider's back from tire spray.
It's very pretty. I like the elegant design for the bottom bracket. But I agree that the rear fender is too short. And it would be incredibly difficult to mount lights anywhere on it. Unless the lights are integrated into the design? I couldn't tell.
"It looks quite cool."
Understatement of the year!
Everything about this design is briliant. I love how all the technical parts are hidden inside the frame -- hydraulic brakes, integrated lights, drivetrain (can't tell if it's a belt or a chain), gears. Nothing but smooth lines and clean surfaces on the outside. I can't imagine how much a production model would cost, but I think it's time to start saving up.
Lights are shown here, very unobtrusive (and probably not very effective either): http://www.flickr.com/photos/carltonreid/4109915634/in/set-72157622816199738/
Thanks for posting, looking forward to your opinions!
The fender and rack are issues that have been resolved in the concept, in drawings that is. In that sense the prototype in the video isn't finished (yet). There is an extension for the fender, and there are bags / skirt guards for the groceries. Also the rear light does not only illuminate the stars ;) If you scream hard enough that you like it, Cannondale may produce it someday!
Check, if you are interested in the bike's details, www.vanmansum.nl
that is a very elegant cycle :) No hanging wires, no chains too! I always thought shaft-powered cycles were out of use.
Plenty to like, but umm, where are her groceries (in a disposable thin-film plastic bag to boot)?
That bike needs a basket.
