I was just reading this article "Bicyclists to LA Drivers: We are traffic" and I recalled a poster I had done last year.
Isn't it time to just make this point?
Fortunately, there is a silver-lining in the clouds of anti-bicycle sentiment. A spot of research in the UK has shown that sentiment towards cyclists is actually rather positive and it's improving. Read the good news at The Guardian:
"Cyclists! The public thinks you're cool and normal"
10 thinking out louds:
That's because I am cool and normal.
Unfortunately, this certainly isnt the case in my city of Adeladie, Australi. Most motorist's attitides really stink when it comes to bikes, but I truly hope that this will change in time.
I used to live in Berkeley, California for 2 months and I simply can't forget this cyclist i saw with a t-shirt that on the back said: ONE LESS CAR...
I mean thats what we have to get drivers to understand. 1 cyclist means one less car! hence less traffic!
Its logic!
Perhaps the poster should say (less) TRAFFIC. We do, after all, take up less space. It strikes me that highlighting the mutual benefits is going to improve attitudes more than confrontation.
I've been biking off and on for over a decade, and daily for the last 4 years. As cycling has exploded back into the mainstream, motorist attitudes have changed a lot. And for the better.
Why? I'd bet it's because as more people bike, most motorists know a cyclist well, so there's a face to cycling, and we're no longer just a slow moving pylon in their way.
In many ways, it's no different than the gay rights movement. 30-40 years ago, most people lived in the closet, so homosexuals were some scare "other." Now that more people are out, most everyone knows a friend or family member who's gay, and it's no longer so foreign. Result: attitudes have improved in most corners of society.
Great to see some else pointing out that road are for people, not just cars.
Hey! This photo was made in Budapest! :)
Apparently they are in London.
In the 90's it was "We're here, we're queer, get used to it!". Maybe now it should be "We're here, with gears get used to it!"
Pay registration then, if you demand use of the road , PAY FOR IT!!!
Unfortunately not all the UK's media interpreted the report in the same way:
