
Christian sent us this photo from the Five Boro Bicycle Race back in 1981. 17,000 participants took place in the event that was sponsored by CitiBank and American Youth Hostels. Five years previously, in the inaugural race/ride, there were 200 cyclists.

Though "Tour" is understood in Europe as a race, "Tour" in America is simply just that. A chance to get on your Bicycle and ride on streets closed off to cars, to see the five boroughs of NY.
There are always the handful of hammerheads that need to be in the front, but most are happy to enjoy the freedom, sights and fellow citizens on this leisurely and enjoyable ride.
